Congressman Chris Murphy is a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee and its Health and Telecommunications Subcommittees, and the Oversight and Government Reform Committee and its National Security and Foreign Affairs and Government Management, Organization and Procurement Subcommittees. The Energy and Commerce Committee is often referred to as one of the three most powerful committees in Congress, along with the Appropriations and Ways and Means Committees. It has the broadest jurisdiction of any committee in the U.S. House, overseeing policy on health care, energy, the environment, global warming, consumer product safety, telecommunications, and other matters. In the coming Congress, any health care reform or energy reform legislation will go through the Energy and Commerce Committee. Murphy is the first Member of Congress from Connecticut to sit on the Energy and Commerce Committee in over a decade, and only the fourth Member from Connecticut to serve on the Committee in the past fifty years. Murphy is also a member of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which is the main investigative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives, and has broad jurisdiction over federal government management. The committee's high-profile hearings have covered subjects from reconstruction in Iraq, to the state of our economy, to pharmaceutical marketing practices. On this powerful committee, chaired by New York Congressman Edolphus Towns, Murphy plays a role in investigating and proposing solutions to the nation's most pressing issues, including the management of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the implementation of Medicare Part D, and the need for open and effective government. |
